TRIO CHAGALL

Defined as “a very young trio that is already very mature in its search for refined interpretations” (ARCHI magazine) the Trio Chagall was estabished in 2013 by three musicians from the Conservatorio “G. Verdi” in Turin. It made a name for itself when it won second prize – no first prize was awarded – in the 20th edition of the Premio Trio di Trieste, where it also earned three special prizes. In September 2023 the Trio took first prize in the presigious Schoenfeld International String Competition in Harbin in China. The Trio is based in Switzerland right now, perfecting its repertoire at the Hochschule fur Musik in Basel.
This evening’s programme starts with a trio by Haydn, no. 27, composed in Vienna in 1797. This will be followed by a rarely heard rendering of Trio op.24 by Mieczyslaw Weinberg (1919-1996), a Polish composer, naturalized Russian. His life was marked by various difficulties, first due to the Nazis, then to the Soviet dictatorship, which prevented him expressing himself fully. He had the backing of eminent musicians, such as Shostakovic, Rostropovic, and Sviatoslav Richter, who understood and appreciated his outstanding talent. He wrote only one trio with piano, in 1839, Trio op.49, a masterpiece of its type for the 19th century.
The concert ends with a piece by Mendelssohn, dated 1839, a gem of German Romanticism.
